Bed bugs, or Cimex lectularius, are a hematophagous (bloodsucking) insect with the oddly vampiric feeding habit of emerging from their hidden nests in the late dark hours of the night to feed off of living humans, drinking their blood. It is their only source of food, unless humans are not present, in which case they will feed off of animals, birds and bats. Birds and bats are sometimes unwitting carriers of bed bugs, inadvertently aiding the parasitic bugs in their proliferation as the insects are transported to different locations, thus spreading their populations further geographically.
In recent decades, the seriously decreased numbers of bed bugs which had reached an all time low in the mid 1940’s-1950’s has since seen an enormous resurgence in their numbers, and consequently infestation has become a considerable problem. It is a serious concern in Manhattan, New York City, which has been given infamy with the dubious name of “Bed Bug Capital of the Country” due to the massive numbers of bed bugs in that concentrated area. Because these insects have developed a natural resistance to chemical pesticides through evolution, the battle of chemical pesticide versus bed bug has reached new levels of toxicity and extremity. Research and development of more effective chemicals is an ongoing work, though not much has been produced that has been shown to be completely effective in eradicating the bed bugs from any areas. In the middle of the 20th century, fumigation by hydrogen cyanide was enough to kill bed bugs in every stage of development and their eggs. Because this method was so toxic to humans, other poisons were created and used. DDT became the best available option to eradicate bed bugs with toxins and chemicals, and it was safer for humans to use.
Bed bugs in certain areas have developed enough of a genetic immunity to DDT, pyrethroids and organophosphates that it isn’t useful or practical in the extermination of the pests. Pyrethroids and other chemical pesticides are often ineffective against what could be called ‘city bugs’, as well. Different species of bed bugs in less populated areas are still able to be killed by these products, but Cimex lectularius in highly populated areas like New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco have become impervious to such chemical warfare and other options for pesticides are being researched and developed in order to eliminate the bed bug problems in those areas.
