Bed bugs, or Cimex lectularius by their scientific name, are a parasitic bug that is about the same shape and size as an apple seed. Though they have been around for thousands of years, living in basically every part of the world where humans live, they were almost extinct at one point midway through the 20th century, but have since made a prolific comeback and have become quite a problem in first world countries, including America, in particular the eastern United States. Their biggest infestation has been in Manhattan, New York, and as a major travel hub of the world, that breeding area has allowed them to spread to other parts of the world. Bed bugs are experiencing considerable resurgence in their populations. Some scientists attribute this massive growth in numbers to a resistance built up to pesticides, but that isn’t the sole cause of the increase and that topic is still under debate. Where do they live?
Bed bugs are so named for their preferred habitat of choice which is the bedding of humans. As mostly nocturnal bugs, they will only emerge from their hiding places in homes during the night, in search of food. There are many hiding places for bed bugs around a home, including in closets, plates over electrical outlets and light switches, and cracked and peeling paint or wallpaper, but they do prefer the soft recesses of a bed, tucking themselves away in the crevices and seams of the mattresses. They tend to live in aggregate groups, instead of singly, adding to the possibility and problems of infestation. What do they eat?
This is one of the most vampiric bugs of the insect world. Bed bugs feed exclusively on blood, most especially that of live humans which is their host of choice, though they do sometimes feed on animals and birds. Full grown bed bugs in colder climates can go up to a year without feeding, but in warmer weather, they can only go up to about six months without drinking human blood. Typically, when humans are available to them to feed on, they will drink blood about every five to seven days. Don't fret, call the Bed bug Exterminators of Cincinnati
Are they harmful to humans?
Though they can inflame allergies in some humans, they do not carry viruses, pathogens or diseases and are not considered harmful. Some people will experience red spots on their skin a week or two after being fed on, as a result of the saliva that the bed bug injects into the skin when it feeds.
